Evaluating the Labor-Market Effects of Compulsory Military Service

چکیده
Evaluating the Labor-Market Effects of Compulsory Military Service We identify the causal effect of compulsory military service on conscripts’ subsequent labormarket outcomes by exploiting the regression-discontinuity design of the military draft in Germany during the 1950s. Unbiased estimates of the effect of military service on lifetime earnings, wages, and employment are obtained by comparing men born before July 1, 1937 (the “White Cohort”) who were exempted from compulsory military service to men who were born on or shortly after this threshold date and hence faced a positive probability of being drafted. We find that the putative earnings advantage and wage premium of those who served in the armed forces vanish when selection effects are taken into account. JEL Classification: J31

متن کاملLong–term Effects of Conscription: Lessons from the UK∗
The effect of military service on subsequent earnings has not been taken into account in the decennial debate on the abolition of military conscription in Western Europe. This paper, using a quasi–natural experiment due to the abolition of military conscription in the UK in 1960, provides evidence of the long–term effects of conscription on subsequent earnings. In particular, we explore whether...
متن کاملDo guns displace books ? The impact of compulsory military service on the demand for higher education ∗
Compulsory military service is expected to have a negative impact on the demand for higher education through its effect on the returns to human capital investments. This latter impact is due to, among others, skill atrophy (i.e., the depreciation of human capital learned before military service), the acquisition of skills not relevant for the civilian labor market and the associated time lost d...
متن کاملThe Impact of Compulsory Military Service on Educational Attainment
Do Guns Displace Books? The Impact of Compulsory Military Service on Educational Attainment Compulsory military service typically drafts young men when they are at the height of their learning ability. Thus, it can be expected to depress the demand for higher education since skill atrophy and the delayed entry into the civilian labor market reduce the returns to humancapital investments. Attend...
